Head Relapping & Replacement

Once a tape head has worn to the point where performance is affected - generally in the form of high frequency loss and overall instability, particularly on edge tracks - it is no longer usable and careful restoration of the original head contour is required. Following a microscopic inspection of the head gap, the original contour is then restored as closely as possible. This is also necessary in order to recover the original frequency response, particularly at lower frequencies. Depending on how far wear has been allowed to progress between laps, relapping can usually be performed 2 to 3 times over the life of a typical pro audio head.

As part of head refurbishment, inductance tests are made to confirm the electrical condition of each channel. Head wiring is also repaired as needed. If the head was received as part of an assembly, it is optically aligned to conform to guides and other heads present on the assembly. Optionally, flutter rollers can be cleaned and lubed for an additional fee. A head report confirming electrical and mechanical condition is available upon request for each job we complete. In the event that your heads cannot be reconditioned, JMA Audio will recommend OEM or custom manufactured replacements tailored to your specific requirements.
